What Happened When These Global Leaders Stopped Hiding Behind Technical Expertise

How can brilliant leaders be even more effective at influence? Here’s an example of what one global corporate did recently, and what the research tells us about how to increase performance.

Over the last few months, my team and I have been working with a global financial services company that operates across 150+ countries. Brilliant technical minds. World-class expertise. But powerful communication that tangibly drives their business forward? That’s where things were inconsistent for them.

Over the last few months, my team and I have been working with a global financial services company that operates across 150+ countries. Brilliant technical minds. World-class expertise. But powerful communication that tangibly drives their business forward? That’s where things were inconsistent for them.

The Shift That Changed Everything

Here’s what we didn’t do: try to turn technical experts into polished corporate speakers. Instead, we focused on helping them communicate authentically while leveraging their deep knowledge.

This approach is backed by compelling research. In a study of 566 professionals published in the Journal of Management, researchers found that ‘through trust from coworkers, authentic self-expression had a positive indirect effect on job performance, whereas authentic and exaggerated self-enhancement had negative indirect effects.’ In other words, being genuinely yourself at work drives better results than trying to present an artificially polished version.

Through our global team, we applied the CoachAdviser Communicating with IMPACT Model in an intensive workshop where every participant brought real, upcoming presentations. No hypothetical scenarios – actual regulatory meetings and major partner negotiations.

The Results That Followed
By the end of our work together:

  • Their leaders delivered major presentations to regulatory bodies with significantly improved confidence.
  • The senior team showed enhanced gravitas across high-stakes meetings.
  • Several leaders successfully influenced key stakeholder decisions using their new approach.
  • Follow-up coaching ensured the changes stuck in daily leadership situations.

As a Leader, what can you take from this?

  • Your expertise is your foundation, not your limitation. The most effective leaders don’t hide their technical knowledge – they translate it into language that influences their specific audience.
  • Authenticity beats polish every time. These leaders didn’t become different people; they became more powerful versions of themselves by communicating with genuine self-belief rather than manufactured presentation skills.
  • Practice with real scenarios accelerates learning. When you apply new communication approaches to actual upcoming presentations, you embed the learning faster and see immediate results.

What difference does this make?
When leaders can communicate with IMPACT, they connect quickly and strongly with their stakeholders. They don’t just deliver better presentations – they are more effective in those important, small meetings also. This drives business outcomes, influences key relationships and accelerates their own career progression. Your ability to translate knowledge into influence often determines your success more than the knowledge itself.  The leaders in this company didn’t just improve their presentation skills – they transformed how they show up as executives. And that transformation touched every relationship and every outcome that followed. The same can happen for you.
