From Direction to Inspiration: The Impact of Coaching our Teams

Coaching is a powerful tool that inspirational leaders can use to develop their team members’ skills, performance and psychological well-being. Not only that, but coaching can also mitigate the risks of leaders derailing!

What we know from research: We know that coaching has a significant impact on skills and performance. Research also suggests that coaching influences self-awareness and psychological capital, the four key components of which are hope, optimism, self-efficacy and resilience.

Coaching positively affects workplace productivity and psychological well-being in situations that require us to manage pressure and stress. It also increases a sense of satisfaction with life and a feeling of being supported.

My POV: Coaching is not about fixing problems or providing all the answers; it’s about empowering our team members to find their own solutions, develop their strengths and reach their full potential.

I find leaders often avoid coaching thinking they need a lot of space to give it the time it deserves, but actually, you can bring coaching quickly and efficiently into your leadership style with powerful results.

As a Leader, what can you do?

  • Make coaching conversations a regular part of your interactions with team members to help them develop their skills and performance. Support your team members’ psychological well-being by coaching them on how to manage stress, build resilience and maintain a positive outlook.
  • Giving useful advice and providing direction has been a part of any leader’s successful journey – we are valued, in part, because of this. This can make it difficult to pause and ask good questions. Hold back before giving your team all of the answers.
  • Sponsor your team members’ growth by advocating for their development and providing them with access to coaching.

Why it matters: By incorporating coaching into our leadership behaviours, we can help our team members develop the skills, mindset, and resilience they need to succeed in their roles and navigate challenges. This not only benefits individual team members but also contributes to the overall performance and well-being of our team and organisation.

Hear what the Head of HR at EIT Urban Mobility had to say about developing their team and embedding a coaching culture within their organisation:

“Our journey toward building a coaching culture has been transformative, both for our organisation and our employees. By embracing coaching leadership, we’ve not only adapted to the changing needs of the workforce but also fostered a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The training delivered by CoachAdviser, experts in their field, was a blend of theory and a lot of practice, ensuring that all participants fully master the use of coaching techniques and tools.
